Compounded drug notice

Compounded tirzepatide is prepared for an individual patient by a U.S. pharmacy licensed in the state where it dispenses, under a prescription from a licensed provider. Federal law permits compounded drugs to be prescribed, but they are not FDA-approved, and the FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or manufacturing quality. Compounded tirzepatide is not Mounjaro® or Zepbound® and is not a generic or equivalent version of either. What it is used for

Tirzepatide is a dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. When prescribed for weight management it is used together with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity in adults with obesity, or with overweight and at least one weight-related medical condition. Whether it is appropriate for you is decided by your licensed provider after reviewing your health history. It should not be combined with other GLP-1 medicines and is not for people with type 1 diabetes.

Do not use tirzepatide if you

• have, or a family member has had, medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC);
• have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2);
• have had a serious allergic reaction to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients;
• are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding;
• are already taking another GLP-1 receptor agonist medicine.

How it is taken

Once a week, on the same day each week, as a subcutaneous injection under the skin of the abdomen, thigh or upper arm. Your provider starts at a low dose and increases it in steps, usually no more often than every four weeks, according to how you tolerate it. Use a new needle for every injection and never share vials or needles.

Before starting, tell your provider if you

• have or have had problems with your pancreas (pancreatitis) or kidneys;
• have type 2 diabetes and a history of diabetic retinopathy;
• have or have had gallbladder problems or severe stomach problems such as gastroparesis;
• have a history of depression or suicidal thoughts;
• take insulin, sulfonylureas or any other medicine for diabetes;
• take birth control pills — tirzepatide may make them less effective. Your provider may recommend a non-oral or barrier method for four weeks after starting and after each dose increase;
• are scheduled for surgery or a procedure under anesthesia or deep sedation;
• take any other prescription or over-the-counter medicines, vitamins or herbal supplements — tirzepatide slows stomach emptying and can change how oral medicines are absorbed.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Tirzepatide should not be used during pregnancy and may harm an unborn baby. Tell your provider if you become pregnant or plan to. It is not known whether tirzepatide passes into breast milk; discuss feeding options with your provider.

Serious side effects — get medical help right away

• Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis): severe pain in the stomach area that does not go away, with or without vomiting, sometimes spreading to the back.
• Gallbladder problems, including gallstones: pain in the upper stomach, fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, clay-colored stools.
• Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), more likely if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea: dizziness, sweating, shakiness, confusion, blurred vision, fast heartbeat.
• Kidney problems: vomiting or diarrhea can cause dehydration, which may worsen kidney function.
• Serious allergic reactions: swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, trouble breathing or swallowing, severe rash, rapid heartbeat.
• Severe stomach problems, including persistent nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.
• Changes in vision in people with type 2 diabetes.
• Increased heart rate while at rest.
• Depression or thoughts of suicide — report any change in mood or behavior.
• Food or liquid entering the lungs during surgery or procedures under anesthesia or deep sedation.

Common side effects

Nausea, diarrhea, decreased appetite, vomiting, constipation, indigestion, stomach pain, tiredness, belching, heartburn, hair loss and reactions at the injection site. Digestive symptoms are most common when starting or increasing the dose and often ease over time. This is not a complete list.
